George Banco Staff Take Part In The Bath Men’s Walk 2017 For Dorothy House Hospice Care

On Saturday 18th March a team of 15 men (and Bumble the Labrador) from George Banco joined nearly 600 other participants taking part in the Bath Men’s Walk 2017 raising much needed funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care based in Winsley, Bradford-on-Avon.

The Dorothy House Foundation has been providing care for patients suffering with life limiting illnesses since 1976, helping both the patient and their family through one of the most difficult times of life imaginable. Like with many charities, Dorothy House relies on the kind hearted charity of individuals and organisations to help fund the great work that they do.

Neil Critchley, Operations Director said,

I chose Dorothy Hospice as our company charity as they are an excellent local hospice providing a great service to the local community and rely on charitable donations. George Banco staff has already experienced its services when unfortunately one of our teams father was cared for by them before his death. My dad also had use of such a hospice before he passed, so I’m personally aware of the great job they do

The day itself started at 11am at Dorothy House Hospice with registration. The team collected their T-shirts and got ready for the off at 12 pm sharp!

The walk route itself was eight miles in length and took everyone along the canals and pathways through the stunning local countryside all the way to the Rec, the home of Bath rugby. There was a quick stop off at The George Public House in Bathampton for refreshments and then on to the finish line.

In total 15 men took part on behalf of George Banco and we’re proud to say all completed it and thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Bath Men’s Walk 2017 Image 3Although the event is purely for fun, a couple members of the team decided that they wanted to go for the front positions with the aim of being the first over the line. So in the final stages of the walk they broke in to a gentle jog, which in turn led to a sprint finish. They were rewarded for their efforts by achieving third, fourth and fifth in the overall standings. Well done George (and Bumble), Karl and Craig who deservedly enjoyed their pie and pint once they had recovered.

Once at the Rec, it was time for the George Banco team to relax a little and settle down to watch the final day of the Six Nations rugby with all the other participants.

Our Welsh CEO was a little disappointed with the last 20 minutes of the France v Wales game, as was the rest of the team with the result of the England v Ireland game, although the overall tournament result made up for England’s loss on the day, at least for the England supporters.

The aim of the day was to raise funds for the Dorothy House Hospice Care and the George Banco team were proud to raise £1,235 in sponsorship. George Banco paid for the £25 per person entrance fee increasing the grand total to £1,610.

Bath Men’s Walk 2017 Image 4We also wanted to say a special thanks to the ladies of George Banco. We are open on Saturdays and so the ladies volunteered to cover the operations at George Banco allowing the chaps to partake in such a worthwhile event. We enjoyed ourselves so much that it was agreed at the time that George Banco would be taking part in as many future events for Dorothy House Hospice Care as we can. To this end the George Banco ladies have agreed to take part in the upcoming Women’s Walk later this year, and we will be entering a team in the Bubble Rush event happening in June.
